What ‘Research Use Only’ Means

For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption.

You’ll see ‘Research Use Only’ (RUO) on many lab materials, including everything sold by OWSA Labs. Here’s what it means, in plain English.

The definition

An RUO material is supplied for laboratory research: in vitro work, analytical method development and similar non-clinical studies. It isn’t a medicine, it isn’t approved for diagnosis or treatment, and it isn’t intended for use in humans or animals.

What the label tells you

  • The material is sold for lab research only.
  • It hasn’t been assessed or authorised as a medicine, food or cosmetic.
  • No claims are made about effects in people or animals.

Your responsibilities as a buyer

  • Buy only for legitimate laboratory research.
  • Handle and store materials following good lab practice and your institution’s procedures.
  • Keep materials secure and out of reach of anyone without appropriate training.
  • Keep records of what you received and how it was stored.
  • Dispose of materials and waste in line with local rules.

Questions we can’t answer

We can’t answer questions about human use, dosing, or effects in people or animals, and our support team won’t advise on them. If you’re unsure whether your intended work is research use, please don’t place an order.
